Marasea Market Night

I’m on a sea food diet, I see food and I eat it.

Marasea offers a seafood experience and is located in Sheraton Sharjah Beach Resort & Spa. On inquiring further about the name, I was told that Marasea is Arabic for Marina. Marasea takes a modern approach to Sharjah’s fishing tradition and serves its patron’s with its fresh catch which explains the taste. Hence, the menu changes on a daily basis.

The moment you step out of the elevator to Marasea, you are greeted by their friendly staff dressed in a qipao, and you are shown into the restaurant. The staff is very attentive, pleasant and are always tending to the needs of the visitors.

The center piece designed to resemble a ship doesn’t go unnoticed at all. The restaurant is on fleek with its ambience – dim lights, and soothing oriental music keeps you company while you get mesmerized by the wide platter that’s offered from different Asian countries. From Tokyo to Peking, they have it all covered. Authentic Asian food from different countries infused with different flavors tingle your senses and makes you wonder where to start.

Post the tour of the restaurant, we were offered Fresh Lemon mint juice which is made in house and tasted divine. When I was told that I wouldn’t find a similar tasting lemonade elsewhere, I did smirk a little – as I’m a lemon mint person. But boy, was I wrong. The lemon mint juice was served in a tall glass stacked with lemon slices and was placed along with sugar syrup and a bottle of lemon mint juice exclusive to Sheraton. The juice was refreshing, and I was all excited to try their menu.

I started off with the Tokyo section – as nothing says food more than sushi. I totally love sushi and can eat sushi worth my bodyweight. However, I’m still not the ‘authentic sushi’ person and I prefer my sushi meat to be cooked than raw. I was elated when I was told that the sushi is offered with cooked meat – I loved the sushi and it was just perfect.

With my sushi beautifully lined on my plate I went to the starters section – ginger chicken sounded like a good option and I generously filled my plate with it.

We gradually started off with our main course and were spoilt for choices from fish to crab, from rice to noodles – you name it they had it. We both opted out of trying soup and salads as we wanted to build an appetite for the main course.

I loved the chilli crab – it was a bit messy to eat, but the sea food monster in me didn’t mind the mess and ate it nevertheless. If you do order it a la carte you are given crab cutters and gloves, so as to not be as messy as me.

They also have a special set menu called Marasea catch, in case you don’t want to try the buffet.

We were spoilt for choice in the dessert section as well.  We opted for chocolate cake, rice pudding topped with marshmallows and mango mousse topped with tapioca balls. The chocolate cake was a clear winner – it was moist and just melted in the mouth.

Marasea gives options not only in wide array of food, but also in the seating. You can either sit inside the restaurant or sit outside in their terrace (depending on the weather). I loved the outside seating area, with dim lights and the gorgeous view. You have the beautiful Sheraton Hotel pool on one side and on the other the city lights adorn the hotel like a jewel.

If you prefer private dinners – they also arrange for the same. So if you are looking for a private romantic dinner or for family dinner, do make your reservations 24 hours ahead and soak in the beauty of the property and the amazing food.

They also offer  Master class for a group of minimum 10 people. It's an absolute fun wat to bond over cooking food. An excellent choice for corporate's, and family get together's.

Little italy

Hello Foodies,

I had an opportunity to visit Little Italy in Sharjah, and I have contemplating since then as to whether or not I should write a review of that place. If you are wondering why – read on.

I have been reading such amazing reviews of Little Italy, that I had the restaurant on my list of vegetarian restaurants to eat at during Lent.

Little Italy is easily locatable in Safeer mall. We reached at 8:30 p.m., and walked in to a dimly lit empty restaurant. They have tried to get an Italianesque ambiance with the tiny window sills decorated with flowers and the artificial vineyard etc.

The major turn off when we walked in were sticky floors, personally it isn’t something that I’m comfortable with. I pushed that aside and headed over to our table, expecting a good dinner.

We started off with minestrone soup, which was more of thin clear soup with few vegetables in it as opposed to authentic Italian minestrone soup which is thick and includes loads of vegetables often with the addition of rice or pasta.  The soup was a major let down for me.

We were served water in glasses that was unclean and had visible fingerprints on it.

Soup was accompanied with garlic bread, It was topped with oodles of cheese and tasted amazing, but it didn’t have any garlic flavor.

The only saving grace was the Pasta Barbaresca. It was served with luscious creamy sauce topped with broccoli, tomato, parmesan cheese and chilli flakes. It was super flavorsome and palatable. I dived in for a second serving almost immediately.

Pasta was followed by Pizza Meloni with exotic vegetables. It looked amazing and when we were served I could see the amount of cheese in the pizza which made my mouth water. However, the first bite was disheartening and I didn’t enjoy the Pizza as much as I did the pasta. Moreso, the server dropped cheese in my glass and didn’t bother to replace it.

For dessert, we opted for Tiramisu and Panacotta.  Tiramisu was just perfect – imagine your fork sliding through a cloud of mascarpone and whipped cream, softened by liquer spiked espresson and then settling on cocoa sprinkled on the plate – absolute heaven. Tiramisu was dessert heaven, and was much needed post the main course that failed to excite my palate.

Panacotta was served with thin slices of apple and was just the perfect end to my dinner.

Little Italy is more of an Indianised Italian cuisine. Probably we let the manager decide our dinner and hence had a bad experience. However, It would definitely take me a lot more than convincing to go back to Little Italy.

Rajasthan Al Malakhi

My Love affair with Rajasthani food started way back when I was in school. I distinctly remember wolfing down daal bhaati made by my friend’s mom. When I received an invite from Rajasthan Royal to try out their Thali, it just took me back to those gastronomic memories. Needless to say I was really excited and was looking forward to a wonderful experience.

Rajasthan Al Malaki offers vegetarian food from the state of Rajasthan in India. It is a restaurant that serves Rajasthani Thali. For those who are relatively new to the concept of thali - The word Thali translates to plate, specifically referring to a round stainless plate with little bowls consisting of a wide variety of dishes. Appetizers, main course and dessert is served together. In India, each and every state has its own Thali based on its regional cuisine. Many places offer 2 kinds of Thali- vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

Rajasthan Al Malakhi follows a similar concept of Thali – wherein an empty thali is placed on the table and the moment you sit, the servers will start hovering around you to place food in the empty thali. On weekends they have special thali- Royal Thali. All their thalis are served with Chaas or Flavored Indian buttermilk. It is a nice way to digest a large meal.

Our thali meal included – weekend special – dal bhatti with churma. Starters - dahi vada, kachori and sandwich dhokla. 4 types of curry – paneer maharani, aloo matar, jaipuri gotta, and green vegetables. 3 types of dal – rajasthani dal, sweet dal and rajasthani kadi. 3 types of roti – mini phulka’s served generously with ghee, puri and jowar roti. 2 types of rice – tawa pulao and moong khichdi. 2 desserts – malpua (fried generously in desi ghee) and apple basundi. The accompaniments included mix salad, papad, pickle and chutney.

So ready to be filled

Dahi Vada

Dal bhatti and churma was amazing, it reminded me of the dal bhatti made by my friend’s mom. I wanted . A Rajasthani meal is incomplete without Dal Batti Churma. Deep fried Batti, slightly spicy dal and semi-sweet Churma made a perfect combination. Dahi vada was just perfect – it melts in your mouth and is a burst of flavors that titillate your senses (foodgasm). Both Kachori and sandwich dhokla failed to impress my palate.

Daal Bhatti

kachori

Paneer Maharani was definitely the winner, you really can’t compete with paneer (cottage cheese). Cheese dumplings in perfect gravy was the hit for both me and my husband. Dal has always been my favorite and needless to say all 3 dals were yum. For someone who is new to north Indian kadi, the kadi can be a bit overpowering. However, those who love their kadi’s with gram flour dumplings would definitely love the kadi served here. Rajasthani kadi is a specialty of Rajasthani cuisine - it is cooked gram flour dumpling with a spicy curd gravy.

Yummy sabzi

The tawa pulao was very tasty as well. Another must-try is the Khichdi. It is a simple and basic dish, prepared with rice and lentils.

Tawa Pulao and Moong dal Khichdi

For the desserts, malpua won hands down, especially the ones that were served piping hot, they just melted in your mouth. The taste of desi ghee coupled with the crunch of pistachio was addictive. Apple basundi was tasty too. However, between the two I loved the malpua’s more.

I wanted to try everything and hence nibbled onto all the dishes. The food, both quantity and quality is amazing. The servers were ever smiling and welcoming and came back ensuring we were eating and also force fed us more phulka’s.

We were also served Jowar roti with churan and ghee which was a very new experience for me, however it’s so worth trying. I wish I had a bigger appetite and that I did follow the most important rule before going to a thali joint – skip the prior meal.

Jowar Roti with churma and ghee

The menu keeps changing on a daily basis and the thali is priced at AED 30 per person which is a very good price. If you are going on weekends be sure to call ahead and book your table. The place is PACKED. It goes to say about the quality and taste of the food. The restaurant has its own loyal patrons who come back often to enjoy authentic Rajasthani cuisine.

The service was very good. The pricing is very reasonable and affordable. Rajasthan Al Malaki serves delicious, authentic and tasty Rajasthani food.

Danesh (ever smiling and always ready to help)

The only drawback was the size of the restaurant, it did look and feel a bit cramped.

Apart from the restaurant they also have catering and tiffin/mess services. So all those who enjoy having north Indian vegetarian food everyday can call them on the below mentioned number and place an order. For large gatherings, parties do contact them for authentic North Indian food.

Cuisine – Indian, North Indian, Vegetarian
Cost - AED 60 for two people
Location – Behind DPS Sharjah, Muwailih, Sharjah

Nellara

Have you ever felt that food can actually change your mood. I just realized that recently. I was FAMISHED and we went to Nellara for their  South Indian meals.  I was all sorts of angry and annoyed (hunger makes me a monster), but the moment  I sat down I just felt super happy either it was the understanding that food was just minutes away or intution that I was going to have a wholesome meal.

We ordered for meals/thali along with fish fry, and lo behold we were take to a land of food. We were served rice (matta rice), along with two fish curry's, two vegetable curry, sambhar, rasam, buttermilk, tamarind ginger chutney, coconut chutney, papad, payasam and also raw mangoes soaked in salt water (heaven).

I ate every morsel and was so content. The food was so tasty, it felt as though it was made with loads of love. The service, hospitality, hygiene was all very good.

We left with a smile and a full happy stomach. I would definitely recommend Nellara to those who enjoy tasty South Indian meals.
