Matto
Matto is a homegrown Italian
restaurant, located inside the beautifully designed Oberoi Hotel. The place
looks quaint from the outside, but is massive on the inside with gorgeous
interiors befitting an Italian setting.
Matto is run by the same owners of the popular rooftop Iris, also located in the Hotel. It attempts to adopt the similar casual cool vibe

Matto is a dialect
version of pazzo which means ‘crazy’ in Italian – Do I need to say anything
more? When a restaurant literally means crazy, you know you are in for a fun
time. Entering into the restaurant, we were greeted by the friendly and mostly
Italian staff giving the atmosphere an authentic vibe. I immediately fell in
love with this uber chic venue.
I went on Monday, and
was surprised beyond wits to enter into a fully packed restaurant. Quite
unusual for places that I have visited off late. I was told that Monday’s are
for unlimited Pizza’s for AED 80. Well, that’s definitely not something I would
want to miss, especially after eating their delish pizza’s.
Matto’s interior is Instagram
heaven. Details such as low hanging Edison bulbs shining over large group
tables, unfinished tiles, and exposed ceilings resurface throughout the entire
restaurant. The team skillfully incorporates elements to create a place that’s
charming and elegant. They have a live band on Monday's which is equally fun!.
You cannot not admire
the effort behind the restaurant’s bespoke elements. The message board
decorated with postcards from guests, a mural painting of a man kissing a fish,
the yellow vespa holding the DJ console and hanging copper kitchenware.
The
menu however, unlike its playful interior, is traditional and rustic yet covers
a multitude of influences from across Italy. We started off with our drinks
with some Red wine and mocktails.
We
started off with unlimited Pizza’s and tried both vegetarian and non-vegetarian
fares. The Pizza is unlike any I have had to date. I’m not a Pizza person, but
Matto changed that for me. The pizza base was soft and the cheese – the cheese
my gastronomes was unlike any I have had. The veggie toppings were fresh and
tasted so scrumptious. It was then that I knew why Monday’s were jam packed.
You know your food is extremely scrumptious when you don’t feel the need to
have a conversation with your friend. That’s exactly what the Pizza’s at Matto
did for me.
Matto
changed everything I knew about Pizza’s. My reaction to them being unhealthy
and boring has changed to them being comfort food.
We also
tried the Calamarata with clamps and prawns. I devoured every bit of the clamps
and prawns, and went back to the pizza over and over again.
For desserts we were
handed a separate menu. We chose the delicious sounding Matto Rock and the
Sicilian Cannoli. Minutes later I found myself staring at the giant Ferrero
Rocher, and to craze it up, they handed me a wood hammer to break through the
Matto rock (that was definitely something I loved).
The Matto Rock was quite heavy and is definitely one to be shared among 3-4 people. But it definitely is something you should try at Matto. It’s creamy, chocolaty and crunchy all at the same time.

The Sicilian
cannoli stuffed with ricotta cheese and pistachios was just the right
amount of sweet, but I found it a little too hard. Or probably weighing between
chocolate and cheese – chocolate just won for me. But my friend loved the
cannoli and devoured every single bit of it.
Overall,
Matto is a place I’d definitely revisit. The food throughout is assured and
consistent with non-intrusive service with genial camaraderie and warmth. They
have the best pizza I’ve tried in Dubai.
