NOT DEFINED BY COLOR

This article came into being post a conversation with a mom who was worried about the constant bullying her gorgeous (dark skinned) daughter was facing in school. She asked me to talk about my struggles of growing up dark skinned and how this has to stop. I did argue with her, stating that It's normal for kids to be teased at this age and that everyone goes through it. Post our conversation, I felt it was important to let people know my thoughts on the same.

Growing up as a dusky/dark skinned girl was not easy. Certain comments, taunts get ingrained in your system at an early age and at times it’s difficult to get over them.

I grew up being called black forest cake and ‘kaali billi’ (black cat). If you had to ask me then what my favorite colors were, I would say black and white without thinking twice. I had decided back then that those are the only two colors that would suit my skin tone.

I was also teased by my elder siblings that I was adopted (haven’t we all heard that, lol) since I was dark skinned and neither of them were.

I was very shy (hard to believe for those who know me now), and didn’t have many friends (gosh, i do sound like an Ekta kapoor soap saga).

But somehow, something changes about me post grade 10 (still a mystery). I vaguely remember standing in front of the mirror. My reflection screamed and pointed out all my strengths and flaws, and chided me for putting myself down (exaggerated as per my current mind, it should have been less dramatic). Post that, a new ME emerged from the cocoon I had built for myself. A cocoon with low self-esteem and a feeling that I wasn’t pretty enough.

I strongly believe that every individual on this planet has the  will power to not be enveloped in societal pressures and to break free and embrace themselves. Let’s stop hiding behind the ‘I’m a VICTIM’ tag.

Yes, society does throw fair skinned people at us and make us believe they are beautiful. But we fail to understand that irrespective of their skin color they are placed on a pedestal because of their sheer hard work, dedication and yes contacts.

As humans, we have a tendency to play Victim and blame society, media and other mediums for making us feel insignificant. I truly believe that if anyone can make you feel insignificant, less desirable, talent-less it’s YOU and YOU alone. Yes, I have been teased when I was a child, and I have also (shamelessly) teased another individual based on his/her height, skin color, or built. Haven’t you? Then stop being the Victim here.

Let’s talk about matrimony columns now. Yes I also received my “fair” (pun intended) share of advertisements/calls which called for tall/short slim/medium built FAIR brides. Why blame those ads? Everyone has their own inkling of what their better half should be like. For some it’s physical appearance, for others it’s education, family, status etc. So why are we just pointing out the “FAIR” bit. That’s highly ‘unfair’. Our life is too short to fuss over trivial things like physical appearance, religion, economic status etc.

Let’s all see each other as human beings and educate our younger generation on the same. Let them not feel insignificant because of their skin tone, their physical appearance, built etc.

Yes, we do LOOK at an individual first and then understand them, and appearance does matter. But let’s not solely be fooled by a person’s appearance. There is more to the book than it’s cover.

Let’s all remember that at the end either fair or dark or anything in between you will either be eaten by maggots or burnt into ash. Neither will the maggots discriminate nor will the fire.

What will remain is how YOU lived, WHAT legacy you have left behind.

Celebrate and LOVE yourself!

P:S - I stepped away from black and white long back, and have added  colors in my life.

Woollen winters

I love Winters, because I'm always ready for hoodies and cold nights. I'm a person who gets cold even in summers, so you can imagine how cold winter really is for me. However, I love winters because I love sweaters, its just something I have fallen in love with from a very young age, not the one's that hug your frame, but those that hang over your frame, giving you warmth and comfort in return.

Sweaters are effortlessly chic and also hide those flabs that develop in winter through excessive food intake. I hope I'm not the only that eats like an elephant in winters!

Here are my favorite picks this winter. They can be teamed with leggings, skinny jeans, or for those daring to face the cold, you can wear em with shorts. I love the fact that they can be worn as a boat neck sweater or as an off shoulder thereby making it a versatile morning to night outfit.

Style Tip:
Turn your boat neck to an off shoulder with a statement neck piece and that perfect pout of ruby woo, and you can easily convert your morning sweater to an evening girl's night out!

Wear your lovely woollens and flaunt them in style

Arab Cuisine

Food is an integral part of every culture and is what often unites people. It'a amazing to see how food cultures are defined by geographical locations. UAE offers a wide array of delectable cuisines owing to its multicultural environment. However, authentic Arab food is easy to find, and I must add it's something that will tingle your palate. It's neither spicy nor bland, neither oily nor dry. It's a perfect mix. I love Arab food, and I must say what I found back in India was not even close to authentic Arab food (not surprised at all).

RED DESIRES

When in doubt, when happy or sad, when there is an occasion and especially when there is none - just WEAR RED! Red is the color that defines every emotion and especially when it's Versace, it has to suit every mood (wink wink).

Versace Red Suede Sandals with ankle closure, gold metal engraved heel and and plateau.

I have to add, don't be intimidated by their stellar height and plateau. These are one of the most comfortable babies I have worn in a long long time. It's super gorgeous and worth every cent!

Casual Blues

We all have our Lazy days, wherein all we want is to get in our sweatpants and relax. On those days, when hubby makes plans (ugggh) and you are still in that lazy mode, you need an outfit that looks like you put in a lot of effort, when all you did was, drag it over you.

My lazy outfit is this comfy dress. It is soft, airy and gives you enough room  yet hugs your frame perfectly. Rather, it hugs you in the right places and hides your flaws (wink wink). It's the perfect length for my 5'8'' frame and falls just above my knee. It has pockets on either sides, thereby making it an outfit with all comforts. A drawstring at the waist makes the waist look smaller.

The sweater thrown over is one that easily merges with most of my outfits. I love the lipstick print on it and that added pop of pink brightens any dull outfit.

For winters that make you shiver, team it with good old leggings and these will be good to go.

Black & White

Online bought Maxi dresses always end up being ankle length for me, however I somehow love that length, and stick to 'ankle lengths' with most of my maxi dress (I'm sure they are still maxi, if they are not long enough, aren't they?).

I got this lovely chiffon maxi in black, along with a cotton inner wear. The inner silhouette is shorter than the chiffon, which I super love. it has an elastic band below the bust which accentuates my body frame. It's flirty yet chic. It's casual yet stylish.

I paired it with a white blazer with black details, along with a layered gold neck piece. I love the way how the neck-piece effortlessly merges with the outfit and silently says it all.

You can never go wrong with pairing black and white together. Pair a blazer with a maxi dress to add to the outfit. You can play with colors and patterns.

I teamed the outfit with simple white ballerinas that are easily available anywhere, and add to comfort and style.

Yellow n White

If you want to put me in a fix, all you need to ask  is -  my favourite color. I can never choose between magnificent royal shades of black, deep blue, purple, emerald green, ruby red, to the calming pastel shades of baby pink, peach, or light blue. From mysterious black to splendid white, from blazing red to peppy yellow all colors have their own special place in my heart.

I love the brightness and zest associated with yellow. It has that wonderful power to lift my spirits. I'm, no expert on color therapy but I'm positive that colors do play a vital role in determining our moods and balancing them

Team an A-line skirt either of a solid color or with a beautiful print like the one I have worn with a top that has details, either the sleeve or the neckline. I always stick to the safer options of teaming loose flowing bottoms with a fitted top and vice versa.

Statement jewellery is always a saving grace. It spices up any outfit in seconds. I love pearls, gold, silver, bohemian, you name it, I love em.

Shoe essentials in your closet must must must include - Nudes or beige, black, tan, gold and then those burst of colors! I love pairing up my nudes with almost all my outfits as they complement every attire whether formal or casual.

Black & Gold

One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress.

The popular LBD is an essential wear in a women's wardrobe. You can never go wrong with a LBD. It's available in all patterns and materials flattering every body shape there can possibly be. So if you still have not found your's, it's about time you go LBD hunting.

I have too many shoes, said no girl ever. Every shoe has a tale of its own, and memories are what we ought to collect apart from shoes in this world!. These lovely Gold babies are my wedding shoes, and I couldn't have asked for a better gift ever. They are super comfortable, and are the perfect accessory to add to your wardrobe.

The perfect Gold to go with any outfit - Jimmy Choo Gold!

Women love wearing heels, but not everyone has a proper gait with heels. I have seen many of my friends who although love wearing heels, are blissfully unaware that their gait needs assistance. The following video is not a 'I'm here to preach', it's just a small endeavor to show that walking in heels is simple and remember to keep it elegant.

Applebee's

Applebee’s caters to ‘casual dining’. My first experience was that of beaming staff blinding you with their brightest smile and hospitality, serving food in unimaginable large portions. It was pretty surprising to see the portions, as similar themed dining places do not offer such large portions. My husband and me were positively thrilled at the same.

We ordered for the Caesar trio salad and mango banana smoothie. The salad was described on the menu as a course that would be filling for two; hence we decided to not order more, and that was a very wise decision.

We were told with an addition of AED 3, the smoothie would be served as large, and we took that up as well.
My husband being a foodie was the happiest person on the planet. The meal was scrumptious, flavorsome and filling. The salad consisted of prawns, beef, chicken and mushrooms along with garlic bread and an appetizing salad.

The smoothie was filled with goodness of mango and banana and was served with pineapples and apples.

Yep, we scraped of every last morsel from the plate, as it would have been sinful to not do so! (lol)

Applebee’s have become our weekend ‘go-to’ place and we are looking forward to try everything offered on the menu

Hilton Al Hamra Beach and Golf Resort

The Hilton Al Hamra Beach and Golf Resort offers, an exquisite, tranquil, enthralling, serene, and  peaceful dining and relaxation experience.

If you are in the UAE, and are looking for an alternate getaway when you are too lazy to travel, yet want to soak in an environment that relaxes every cell in your body, this is the place to be!

TRICK OR TREATS: My kind of place right in the lobby. Pamper your sweet buds while waiting in the lobby.

And right next to the array of sweets is an assortment of menus from their different restaurants, along with fresh dates.

Le Chalet is the beach side restaurant, which is nestled between the pool and the beach.
It offers a good array of food (mainly the one's you can nibble on fast) and drinks.

Loved the interiors at this place.

My eyes always hover over the sandwich section. My love for Club Sandwiches is epic, and known very well among my family. The Chalet Club was yumsum and filling and was served with those cute twisted fries, which were crisp and piping hot!

Chicken Kebab's left us asking for more.

P:S - The kebab's were almost close to getting over, when I remembered to click this pic!
The same for the lemon mint.

If you are at the Le Chalet, try strawberry mint as well, its very refreshing and fresh.

There is something unexplainable about watching the sun set, and the beautiful colors splattered across the sky.

Mai-Tai lounge was another cozy world in itself. The interiors offered a very contemporary, aesthetic feel. It offered a view of the hotel along with whiff of the sea nearby.

I ordered for Coffee Grog, with assistance from very friendly and hospitable staff. I was in for a surprise when my order arrived. Watch the video here

It was as the menu described and served in the mug below. I was really wanting to take this cute guy home.

Apart from all the scenic beauty, it offers amazing hospitality services that make you want to come back over and over again.
